Employee Benefits
It would seem that employee benefits are a thing of the past. There are
a lot of companies that still have them, but some are slowly getting rid
of them. There are others, like my husband’s company, who want to keep
them, but they are just not what they used to be. It would seem that
more often not, you are not going to find a good job with employee
benefits unless you are working for a very large company. Smaller
business just can’t afford it.
I wouldn’t think it is because smaller businesses don’t want to offer
employee benefits, I think they simply can’t afford it if they want to
stay in business. It’s getting tougher and tougher to find health
insurance at a decent rate, and this is reflected in the costs. I know
that my friend’s husband recently shattered his ankle, and he had to
have screws put in to hold his foot in place. The prices of the screws
was over 50,000 dollars. That was just one screw. Now I am beginning to
understand why no one can afford health coverage. It’s utterly insane.
Other types of employee benefits are disappearing as well. We used to
have dental coverage through my husband’s employer, but they had to take
it away in order to keep our health insurance. Not only that, we have to
pay in for some of our insurance, though I will admit that is a far
better option than having none at all. Because I work from home, I don’t
really have any type of benefit available to me, and that means I have
to rely on what my husband gets. I know that I am lucky in that regard,
as many families don’t have anything that they get for free, or at least
at a greatly reduced cost. Some companies are getting creative when they
can’t afford some types of employee benefits by coming up with others.
This gives their employees something different, even if it’s not the
best they can do.
Many are now trying to have in-house daycare, mental health days, and
many other less costly things that their employees can take advantage
of. Some might even have dry-cleaning or laundry services as part of
their employee benefits. They might even offer free parking. That might
not seem like much but if you are presented with two job offers, and one
has these employee benefits and the other does not, which one are you
going to choose?
